Our Research

The Schnitzer Lab at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine studies the mechanisms responsible for chronic pain and develops effective treatments to improve quality of life.

Chronic Pain

Our lab studies musculoskeletal pain, such as osteoarthritis (OA), and neuropathic pain, including painful diabetic neuropathy. Our research involves evaluating new experimental treatments to determine their efficacy and safety.

The goal of these studies is to assist in gaining FDA approval for these drugs, making them available to patients in the U.S. We also engage in NIH-funded research aimed at predicting which available drugs for knee OA may provide the greatest benefit to individual patients. This initiative is part of a growing effort toward personalized medicine, ensuring more effective treatment with fewer side effects for each person.

Weight Management

Our group has also embarked on a new series of studies investigating the effects of weight-loss therapies, including the latest generation of medications.

These studies aim to assess the safety and efficacy of these experimental therapies in treating overweight and obesity while also exploring the relationship between weight loss and other health outcomes.
