Bioinformatics Analyst

The Bioinformatics Analyst partners with clients to design, develop, implement and maintain business solutions regarding data management and analysis. This includes database administration, data consolidation, data analysis and management reporting. Utilizes software to generate metrics and develops actionable recommendations. Collaborates with various function teams such as marketing, research, and IT to achieve business results.

This position will use current open source software in conducting data analysis for a next generation sequencing system at basic or advanced level. The candidate must have a background in bioinformatics and biostatistics.

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics in Feinberg School of Medicine is seeking Bioinformaticians for the Shilatifard lab to support current Next Generation Sequencing projects with datasets including ChIP-seq, Total RNA-seq, Nascent RNA-seq, and GRO-seq.

Department Manager

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics (BMG) at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine is seeking exceptional qualified applicants for the position of Departmental Manager. The BMG Department is in the heart of downtown Chicago in the state-of-the-art Simpson Querrey Biomedical Research Center and is the home of more than 20 laboratories focusing on diverse areas of human health including cellular biochemistry, epigenetics, metabolism, microbiology, and cancer research.

The ideal applicant will be detail oriented, highly organized, self-motivated, maintain detailed records, and possess the ability to communicate effectively in a diverse and dynamic work environment. A PhD in the biological sciences or biochemistry with some expertise in gene expression is preferred, however, applicants with a demonstrated track record of success as a lab manager are also encouraged to apply. Applicants must have a working knowledge of biochemistry laboratory equipment and possess a detailed understanding of day-to-day laboratory operations.

As Departmental Manager, you will work with the departmental chair to make a significant contribution to the operation of the BMG Department and will facilitate and contribute to cutting-edge research. The Departmental Manager will oversee the organization and maintenance of departmental facilities including scientific equipment (centrifuges, microscopes, chromatography machines, FACS instrument, etc.) as well as managing support staff involved in glass wash, autoclaving and other departmental requirements. This position will interact with industry representatives to schedule equipment preventative maintenance and repairs, and interface with Northwestern University facilities and basic science administration to coordinate necessary repairs and the movement of equipment.

In addition to the Lab Manager role (75%-time commitment), the Departmental Management responsibilities will include involvement in scientific research in the Shilatifard laboratory (25%-time commitment). This will involve attending lab meetings and journal clubs as well as some hands-on time conducting experiments at the bench in collaboration with other Shilatifard lab members.

The salary for this position is negotiable based on experience. The position is full benefits eligible.

Qualifications

  • PhD in the biological sciences or biochemistry (preferred) or 5+ years in a lab manager position
  • Familiarity with molecular and biochemical lab equipment
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to multitask
