Saratsis Pediatric Brain Tumor Laboratory

About Us

Dr. Saratsis’s laboratory focuses on elucidating the mechanisms of pediatric brain tumor formation. Specifically, Dr. Saratsis has previously characterized integrated molecular expression profiles of pediatric brain stem gliomas (diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma or DIPG) and pediatric high-grade gliomas (glioblastoma multiforme or GBM) in order to identify potential pathways of pediatric gliomagenesis. This work has laid the foundation for further exploration of the role of identified molecules of interest in tumor tissue and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) as biomarkers of tumorigenesis and possible therapeutic targets in vitro and in vivo. As a pediatric neurosurgeon in collaboration with other researchers and clinicians in the Departments of Neurological Surgery and Neuro-oncology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Lurie Children’s Hospital, Dr. Saratsis is working to expand access to fresh tumor tissue for cell culture, tumor xenograft development, and tumor tissue profiling, with the aim to develop techniques for advanced tumor molecular subtyping as a basis for targeted, novel therapies to improve clinical outcomes for these otherwise devastating pediatric brain cancers.

The Lab welcomes your questions and comments. For general feedback and inquries, please contact us for more information via our office information below.
